Über die Friendship-Bridge nach Vientiane

Wegweiser zur Friendship-Bridge bei Huay Xai

Laos liegt eingebettet zwischen Myanmar im Westen, Thailand im Süden, China im Norden und Vietnam und Kambodscha im Osten und hat ungefähr die Größe Großbritanniens. Auf vielen hundert Kilometern bildet der Mekong die Grenze zwischen Thailand und dem Binnenstaat. Während des Vietnamkrieges war es Ziel des sogenannten "Secret War" und noch heute stellen abertausende UXO (unexploded Ordnances) eine tödliche Gefahr für viele Menschen in einem der ärmsten Länder der Welt dar. Hierzu bald noch einen Extra-Artikel.

Am Grenzfluss Mekong verbinden heute drei große Brücken (die sogenannten "Friendship-Bridges") die beiden Länder, die wohl bekannteste ist die, die wenige Kilometer entfernt der Hauptstadt Vientiane den Fluss zwischen den Grenzorten Nong Khai und Thanaleng verbindet. Seit kurzem kann diese Brücke auch per Zug überquert werden. Es soll irgendwann Teil der Eisenbahnlinie sein, die quer durch Südostasien von Singapur bis hinein nach Südchina, nach Kunming, führen soll.

Vientiane ist zwar die Hauptstadt Laos', wirkt aber mehr wir eine etwas verschlafene Kleinstadt. Hohe Gebäude fehlen fast vollständig, das Stadtbild wird geprägt von einer Mischung aus laotischem Baustil und französischen Einflüssen aus der Zeit, als Laos französisches Protektorat war. Daran erinnern heute auch eine laotische Version des Triumphbogens (Patou Xai) und unzählige Lokale und Strassenstände, die französische Küche servieren und Crêpes an der Straße braten. Außerdem schmücken unzählige kleinere und größere buddhistische Tempel die Stadt, einer der ältesten ist Wat Si Saket im Herzen der Stadt.

Verlässt man die Stadt findet man innerhalb kürzester Zeit eine Mischung aus Reisfeldern, Ackerflächen und teilweise komplett unberührter Natur. Niedrige Karstgebirge prägen die Landschaft und kleinere Flüsse bilden in Kaskaden herabfallende Wasserfälle die zum Baden einladen. Inzwischen hat man den Wert dieser Natur und der dort lebenden Tiere erkannt und legt Wert auf die Entwicklung eines nachhaltigen Ökotourismus.

Surrounded by other countries, Laos is located in the middle of Southeast-Asia between Myanmar in the west, Thailand in the south, China in the north and Cambodia and Vietnam in the east. For several hundreds of kilometers, the Mekong river is the boarder to Thailand. During the Vietnam War the country was target of the so called "Secret War", thousands of bombs hit Laos and still nowadays there are gazillions of UXO (unexploded ordnances) which are a fatal dangers for people in one of the poorest countries in the world. I'll write an extra article about that fact soon.

Along the border river Mekong three bridges (the so called Friendship-Bridges) connect Laos and Thailand. The one that crosses the river between Nong Khai and Thanaleng close to the capital Vientiane is probably the best known one. Since lately, the bridge can be crossed by train as well. At some point it is meant to be part of the trans southeastasian railway from Singapore to Kunming in China.

Even though Vientiane is Lao's capital, it appears more like a sleepy small town. High buildings are rare in this town. The style of the buildings is a mixture of Lao and French style, the latter dating back to the times, when Lao was part of the French protectorate. The Lao version of the Paris' Arc de Triomphe (Patou Xai) and several French restaurants and bistros are reminiscent of this time. In addition, several smaller and bigger temples decorate the small town, one of the oldest and most famous ones of them being Wat Si Saket.

When leaving the town, you'll find yourself in an area of rice fields, crops and sometimes completely unspoiled nature. Low karst mountains characterize the landscape and small streams form cascades of waterfalls which are beautiful spots for swimming. In the meantime, people and government realized the value of this unspoiled nature and the protection of wildlife and encourage the development of sustainable Eco-tourism.
