450 km ums Eck

"Alice Springs, ist das nicht da, wo der Ayers Rock ist?" wurde unser letzter Aufenthaltsort kommentiert. Und so in etwa ging es uns auch, als wir den Trip geplant haben. Stimmt ja auch fast. Für australische Verhältnisse ist der für die lokalen Aborigines heilige Monolith Uluru auch gleich ums Eck. Er ist "nur" rund 450km südwestlich. Inzwischen fahren wir mit unserem Mietwagen eine gefühlte Ewigkeit durch die sich kaum ändernde Wüstenlandschaft des australischen Outbacks. Unser Ziel sind die berühmten Touristenmagneten Kings Canyon, Uluru ("Ayers Rock") und Kata Tjuta ("The Olgas"). Ersterer ist ein spektakulär in den Sandstein eingeschnittener Canyon. Neben den senkrechten Wänden und den schichtartig aufgetürmten Felsformationen ist vor allem auch der im oberen Schuchtteil gelegene "Garten Eden" sehr beeindruckend. Mehrere permanente Wasserlöcher haben mitten in der Wüste eine einmalige urzeitliche Oase erhalten.

Im Gegensatz zum Kings Canyon ragen Kata Tjuta und Uluru mehrere hundert Meter als markante Monolithen mit ihren fast senkrechten Wänden aus der ansonsten flachen Landschaft auf. Besonders spektakulär wirken die roten Sandsteinfelsen im Sonnenauf- und untergang, wenn sich ihre Farbe mit dem Sonnenstand langsam verändert.

"Alice Springs, isn't that the place where Ayers Rock is?", thats how our current location was commented. And that's about what we thought as well, when we planned the trip. And indeed, that's almost right. For Australian distances, the monolith Uluru which is a sacred place for the local Aboriginal people, is just round the corner. About 450 km southeast. In the meanwhile, we're driving with our rental car a sensed eternity through the Australian Outback with it's dessert landscape practically not changing. Our destination are the tourist hot spots Kings Canyon, Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olga's). The first one is a canyon, spectacular carved into the local sandstone. Besides it's vertical red sandstone walls and and the layered rock formations especially the so called "garden Eden" in the upper part of the gorge is particularly impressive. Several permanent water holes enable a green and original oasis in the middle of the dessert. In contrary to Kings Canyon, the monoliths of Uluru and Kata Tjuta tower some hundreds of meters from the even landscapes with almost vertical walls. The red sandstone rocks are especially spectacular at sunset and sunrise, when the stone changes it's color with the position of the sun.
